Every game has its own terminology and this applies to baccarat as well. It is important to know exactly what these terms mean in order to avoid making costly mistakes at the table. A glossary of the more commonly used is given below in alphabetical order.
Baccarat: Baccarat is a hand with zero value. It is the worst hand possible in baccarat. Baccarat is perhaps the only card game which is named after its worst hand.
Baccarat en Banque
: This is a European variation of baccarat in which the casino acts as the bank.
Banco
: When a bettor wants to match the bank he says “Banco”.
Banco Prime
: When more than one player calls “Banco”, the privilege to match the bank is given to the player to the bank-s right. This privilege is known as banco prime.
Banker Bet
: The bet in which a player wagers that the banker will win.
Burn
: This is the process of discarding a number of cards after the deck has been cut but prior to actual dealing.
Croupier
: The name given to the dealer in baccarat.
Chemin-de-fer
: Another European variation of baccarat in which one of the players is the bank.
Deux Tableau
: This is another name for baccarat en banque.
Discard Tray
: The cards that are no longer in play are kept aside in this tray.
Down Card
: The first two cards of the deal are dealt face down so that only the player can see them. These cards are known as down cards.
Flat Bettor
: A player who wagers the same stake throughout the game is known as a flat bettor.
High Roller
: A high roller is a player who plays with a big bankroll.
House Edge
: The advantage that the casino has over players. In baccarat this advantage takes the form of the commission charged by the casino on the winnings.
Layout
: The layaout is the imprint on the baccarat table that shows the different bets that can be made and the location where these bets are placed.
Ladderman
: The employee of the casino who oversees the baccarat table is known as the ladderman.
Le Grande
: Le grande is the best hand in baccarat with a hand value of 9.
Mini-baccarat
: This is a variation of Baccarat played on a smaller table with fewer players.
Palette
: A palette is a wooden tool that is used for shifting the cards on the table.
Petite
: This is the second highest hand in baccarat with the value of 8.
Player Bet
: The bet in which a player wagers that the player will win.
Shoe
: The cards are stacked in a wooden box, known as a shoe, from which they are dealt one by one.
Standoff
: The outcome of a baccarat game in which the banker and the player tie.
Tie Bet
: The bet in which a player wagers that the game will end in a tie.
Upcard
: A card that is dealt face up is known as an upcard. The third card of the deal in baccarat is an up card.
